Tips for Relieving Stress and Anxiety

What are stress and anxiety anyway?

Sometimes, it could be the load of work in the office, sometimes, it could be the challenges in your relationship, it could be the fight with your parents, and sometimes, it could be an unresolved trauma still haunting your thoughts. The bottom line is, your body feels exhausted, constantly nervous, and tired, with a lack of motivation and a feeling of not being able to move forward and giving up.

Whatever the case may be, if you feel any of the above symptoms, your mental health could be paying the price for physical exertion.

At Positive Living, we advocate for a holistic approach to well-being, including taking care of your mind along with your body. Here are some tips on how to alleviate any stress and anxiety:

  1. Understanding the root cause is essential and will put things into perspective. However, it is important to seek therapeutic help, you cannot be your own therapist. In the meantime, talking to yourself with kindness is extremely important, it’s the voice within that matters the most to your body and brain. This means looking within and asking yourself why you’ve been acting the way you have and acknowledging with compassion and tolerance the impact it has on your mental health and behaviour. It’s good to have this interactive relationship with one’s own body and listen to its signals.

  1. Talk about your feelings and emotions with someone who does not tell you what to do, someone who instead just holds a safe space to listen actively and empathically, without the need to comment. Venting out in a safe space is really helpful for your mental health. Of course, this is even better with a professional, who will assess your situation and guide you on how to channel these feelings and emotions. Learning emotional intelligence from an expert is imperative. This usually involves introspection, which can be daunting, but a good therapist can guide you through it skillfully.

  1. Neuro-Linguistic means the language and dialogue of the mind (Neuro = Neurons-Brain) (Linguistic = Language). The reason why NLP is so powerful is because neuro-scientists have proven that the language inside your head is crucial to the impact of your physical body (the way you feel). You see, the way you speak to yourself has a direct impact on the way you feel. Another tool to go out of your state of stress, depression, or feelings of giving up is optimism! Speaking kind, positive, and powerful words has a tremendous effect on your mood swings. Allow yourself the mental capacity to think happier thoughts and better outcomes for your situation. If you can come up with worst-case scenarios all day long, why not spend some time imagining the best ones too?

  1. Avoid isolation. It’s in our nature as homo-sapiens to connect with others, we are tribal beings. Even though at times isolation seems to be the solution, the fact is, oftentimes, it can only aggravate your situation. You don’t have to be surrounded by many people to feel connected, it takes even just that one right person at times. Connecting with loved ones and appreciating the community and family support you have will help you too. Any individual would certainly appreciate care and support from another human being, it is a wonderful feeling to be loved and cherished, and realise that you’re not alone in this world.

  1. Meditate, and reconnect with yourself. Just take time out for yourself at least once a day and practice mindfulness. This can range from a calming stroll in nature to prayer to just treating yourself with a little more compassion. Any little form of self-care or gathering your thoughts helps.
